Biden Announces Grants for Health Information Technology (posted August 27, 2009)

On August 20, 2009, Vice President Joe Biden announced that $1.2 billion would be made available to help hospitals and health care providers implement and use electronic health records.  A total of $598 million will be used to establish approximately 70 Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers, while another $564 million will be granted to States and Qualified State Designated Entities to support the development of mechanisms for information sharing within an emerging nationwide system of networks.  Grants will be made beginning in Fiscal Year 2010.

USDA Invites Applications From States for WIC Funds (posted April 24, 2009)

On April 15, 2009, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) sent a letter to every State’s Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, Children (WIC).  This letter informed State agencies that in order to receive WIS stimulus funds, they would have to submit an application to USDA by May 11, 2009.  These funds will be distributed to States to establish, improve or administer management information systems for their WIC programs.

HHS Publishes Guidance for Securing Health Information (posted April 24, 2009)

On April 17, 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published guidance regarding technologies and methodologies to secure health information.  As required by the stimulus bill, this guidance builds on the existing requirements of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, which are unchanged.

Community Services Block Grant Allocations Available (posted April 15, 2009)

On April 9, 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the availability of $1 billion for the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program.  These funds are allocated to states, who then grant them to community organizations for the purposes of reducing poverty, revitalizing low-income communities and helping low-income families become self-sufficient.

Comments Solicited for Comparative Effectiveness Research Fund (posted April 9, 2009)

On April 14, 2009, the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research will hold a public listening session in Washington, DC.  Authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the new council will help coordinate research and guide investments in comparative effectiveness research funded by the Recovery Act. The purpose of the listening session will be to hear comments from the public about how the stimulus funds appropriated for comparative effectiveness research should be spent.

HHS Funding Available for Child Support Enforcement Programs (posted March 26, 2009)

On March 26, 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that approximately $1 billion in stimulus funding is available for state programs that establish, enforce, collect and distribute child support.  This funding will be distributed in the form of federal matching funds for the state expenditure of incentive payments to strengthen child support enforcement programs.

NIH Supplemental Grants Available (posted March 26, 2009)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are accepting applications for funding to provide administrative supplements to active NIH Research Grants.  Any institution with an active NIH Research Grant, Research Program, Center Grant, or Cooperative Agreement is eligible to apply for these funds and applications are being accepted continually.

$268 Million in Stimulus Funding for Hospitals Announced (posted March 20, 2009)

On March 20, 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services made $268 million available for Disproportionate Share Hospitals (DSH). These funds are distributed by formula to States that have already obligated all of their FY2009 DSH allotments.

Indian Health Service Releases Report on Stimulus Funds (posted March 20, 2009)

On March 20, 2009, the Indian Health Service released a report on how it will spend the $500 million that it was allocated in stimulus funds.

Senior Nutrition Programs to Receive $100 Million in Stimulus Funds (posted March 18, 2009)

On March 18, 2009, the Health and Human Services Administration on Aging received $100 million in stimulus funds for community senior nutrition programs. This funding is allocated to State governments, which will then award funds to organizations providing nutrition services in local communities.

NIH Announces Availability of $1.5 Billion in Stimulus Funds (posted March 11, 2009)

The National Institutes of Health has published detailed application instructions for stimulus funds worth a total of $1.5 billion. Grants will be awarded for Research Facility Construction, Biomedical and Behavioral Research and Research Instrument Equipment.

Community Health Center Grants Allocated (posted March 9, 2009)

On March 2, 2009, President Obama announced the release of $155 million in grants authorized by the economic stimulus legislation to 126 community health centers across the country. These grants are allocated by formula among the States.

$15 Billion in Medicaid Relief from the Stimulus Bill Headed To States
(posted March 4, 2009)

Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) – the federal match for Medicaid – helps pay for health care for families and some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens. States will be able to access the first two quarters of FMAP funding starting Wednesday, February 25.  A chart detailing funding by state can be found at http://www.hhs.gov/recovery/statefunds.html.
